Royal Family Dance Crew is one of the most iconic dance crews of the modern era — a global phenomenon that began in the heart of South Auckland, New Zealand. Founded in 2011 by visionary choreographer Parris Goebel, the crew was born out of The Palace Dance Studio, a space that quickly became a breeding ground for some of the fiercest dancers in the world. What started as a fusion of sister crews like ReQuest and Bubblegum evolved into a powerhouse collective that would redefine the standards of hip-hop choreography.
From the outset, Royal Family was known not just for its precision and power, but for a signature movement style coined by Goebel herself: Polyswagg — a bold blend of hip-hop, dancehall, and the fierce energy of Polynesian culture. This distinct flavor, paired with undeniable execution, led the crew to dominate the World Hip Hop Dance Championships, where they won the Megacrew division three years in a row (2011–2013) — a feat no other team had achieved at the time.
But Royal Family’s impact soon extended far beyond the competition stage. Their sharp, cinematic performances began racking up millions of views online, catching the attention of global superstars. In 2015, the crew exploded into the mainstream with their role in Justin Bieber’s “Sorry” music video, a viral sensation choreographed by Goebel that showcased Royal Family’s full force. That video alone surpassed a billion views, and opened doors to collaborations with Rihanna, Ciara, J.Lo, Jason Derulo, and multiple K-pop legends like CL, BigBang, and 2NE1.
Yet for Royal Family, dance has never been just about performance — it’s a way of expressing identity, pride, and community. Their routines are fierce, feminine, unapologetic, and deeply rooted in culture. Whether touring sold-out theaters across Europe and Asia or hosting workshops that attract thousands of aspiring dancers, they carry a powerful message: be bold, be proud, and take up space.
